Logan always has a way of cheering me up. Once she sent one of my ex’s flowers and a balloon that read: Out of the Closet. Attached was a card saying: ‘Thanks for a night to remember, James’ and enclosed was a picture of one of her hot gay male friends. Priceless.
Right now she’s between men. Her beauty attracts all types, and her personality keeps them there. She’s funny and witty yet genuine and down to earth. Although we’re both female twenty-somethings who work at Spencer’s, I often long to possess her guile, sharpness, and her uncanny ability to turn a horrible situation into a pleasing one.
We pull no punches with one another, and that’s why she’s definitely my best friend. Sitting at her dinner table we entertain possibilities…
Me, ‘Seth or Mike?’
Her, ‘Are we just talking sex, or relationship?’
‘Does it matter?’
‘Of course. Either way I’d pick Seth, but for different reasons, duh.’
‘Duh? Seth?’
‘Mike’s a please himself first kind of guy which is a dead end in both directions. Seth would probably be extremely attentive in the bedroom, and he would be very patient and straight forward in a relationship’
‘You act as though you’ve tried it.’
‘Only with one of them’
‘What?!’
‘So I slept with Mike, who hasn’t?’
Eeeewwww. I just found out my best friend slept with our mutual friend. It’s extremely weird, and definitely not something I want to envision tonight when I go to sleep, but knowing me it will definitely come up.
Renting a room in a house full of men for the past year has definitely hardened Logan somewhat to the promises, or lack there of, of finding ‘the one’. She has, however, learned how to deal with men and get them to do the small tasks around the house that women need done, like fix things, rinse their plates off, and only leave the toilet seat up when they’re drunk. I love it.
Last year her parents pulled her aside and explained to her that she was adopted. They’re white, while her birth mother is Mexican. Logan told them she always knew she was adopted. She has since started taking Spanish at the local community college. Some people would have freaked, began a dependency on drugs, and drowned themselves in depression, but Logan simply accepted it and moved on. My hero.
Sitting here now, drinking sprite and vodka, laughing about Mike’s lacking ability in the bedroom, I realize that there are so many things in this life I have yet to accomplish. Sleeping with Mike is definitely not one of them, but obtaining a carefree attitude is.
Logan’s phone rings, she takes a look at the caller id and silences it.
‘Who are you avoiding now?’
‘Andrew.’
Andrew is Logan’s on and off again boo. They met a year and a half ago at Spencer’s and began an ‘intense affair’ as Logan calls it. He’s an artist and film editor who was interning at the time and she loved every bit of it. When he finished school and his internship, he quit Spencer’s and began doing freelance work, and now he’s pretty established in the indie scene. She quickly called the whole thing off, although they were never officially together. ‘We didn’t have time for one another and he was being distant,’ was the reason she gave. I think she became increasingly jealous of his success and thought she would never be good enough for him as just a restaurant server. Then she found out she was adopted and they were on again. She started taking Spanish, off again. His work was slowing and on hiatus, on again. Now he’s working and apparently they’re off again.
