 Dear Logan,

            What else can I say but…I think I love you. I know this is sort of out of place coming from me, but as far as I know it’s the truth. I’ve never been around a woman who has made me feel the way you do. Sleeping with you was probably a mistake, but a mistake I don’t regret.

            Look, I know you have a boyfriend and that’s great, I hope you’re happy. But, if you’re not, I hope you realize that I’m here for you no matter what. You’re a great friend and I’m sure an even better girlfriend that I’m trying to experience, but for now I’ll just wait.

            I’ll wait, because you deserve someone who is ready to commit to you fully and honestly. Am I ready? Well, I think so, but I’m not sure. I’m afraid of being hurt and rejected, so I act accordingly. Is it right? Probably not, but here we are.

            Saturday started off hectic, which was a sign of good times, or was it a sign of disaster like our last bbq when things didn’t go quite so well? When we went to pick up the keg we pre-ordered, the store had sold it to someone else, so they offered us twenty-five percent off a substantial amount of beer. The living room set and television the boys purchased from a thrift store was supposed to be delivered Saturday before noon, and instead made a fashionably late entrance at five. The freezer decided it didn’t want to work for an hour so we had to go and purchase a large amount of ice and store it in a brand new cooler. Despite the wrongs, at around nine when the guests started arriving, everything felt right.

            Rachel came and met Mike and Seth and we began drinking and I think they hit it off; there was no awkward silence at all. Logan came around ten, alone, explaining that Andrew had a ton of work to do and may or may not make it. This put a smile on Mike’s face, who wasted no time making up for lost moments. Everything was going fine until my third drink when Ian traipsed in with some floozy on his arm. What? Who does that? Ian. Seth noticed the diss and calmed me down explaining that he wasn’t worth it.

            Around midnight the majority of the party goers were tipsy and Seth, Mike, Logan, Rachel, and I decided to have the inevitable ‘why’ conversation.

Me: Why are guys dickheads?

Seth: Not all of them are, most chicks don’t give the nice ones the time of day.

Me: So they turn into assholes in training?

Mike: Yes, Seth’s on his way.

Me: You took the words right out of my mouth.

Seth: Come on, I’m a guy who simply gives women what they want.

Logan: Or ‘fees’ as you affectionately call them now.

Rachel: I’m sure it’s just a term of endearment.

Logan: I like her already.

The women toast glasses and take swigs to our sly shots at the boys.

Mike: And you guys are totally innocent bystanders?

Me: Innocent? No. Bystanders? Definitely.

Rachel: Until you find greener grass.

Another toast.

Seth: I didn’t want to say this but Lo, you really wanna tell me that you don’t enjoy having your cake and eating it too?

Logan: Not at the same time.

I love Logan, and at this point I’m a little perturbed by Seth. Logan walks off to enjoy an intense conversation with the smokers outside, while Mike’s football buddies pull him away to take shots in the kitchen.

Me: Why are you slowly turning in to an asshole?

Seth: I call them like I see them.

Me: As do I.

Seth: Don’t try and defend your friend’s behavior, I don’t defend Mike’s. And don’t act like your shit don’t stink.

Me: What’s that supposed to mean?

Seth: There’s a reason guys push you away.

Me: Fuck you Seth!

            So, now I’m mad, and faded, and the only thing I can think of to do now is go tell Ian off.

Me: Really? A week after we stop dating you bring some other ho to this party that you knew I was going to be at?

Ian: Chill, it was never serious like that.

Girl: Who are you calling a ho?

Me: You.

Girl: I suggest you shut the hell up.

Me: Or what?

Ian: Can you please attempt to act your age Rosalyn?

Girl: She’s just a young groupie, let’s get out of here Ian.

            I snapped and pushed her into the wall. I may have connected on a punch or two but in the blink of an eye Logan pushed me into Mike’s room. She said she admired my tenacity but told me to never waste a punch on a bitch who wasn’t a direct threat. Mike entered shortly after with a bag of ice, it seems as though the girl managed to throw a bottle at my head. While lying on the bed talking to Mike and Logan the world began to spin and you know the drill, I hurried off to the bathroom.

            During my release I heard arguing and quickly exited to see Mike, Logan, and Andrew in a heated argument. Apparently, Andrew had found some time to come to the party only to find Mike and Logan in Mike’s room. If ever there were a perfect ‘it’s not what it looks like’ circumstance.

Andrew: Relationships are built on trust Lo.

Logan: And I’m telling you the truth, if you don’t believe me that’s your problem.

Mike: She’s telling you the real; look there’s Rosalyn.

Andrew: I don’t want to hear it! You think I don’t notice how you look at her?

Mike: You know what? I don’t have time for this shit.

Andrew: Let’s go Logan.

Logan: No. I’m not going anywhere with you right now, you’re trippin’.

            Andrew quickly walked out of the room and slammed the door. We all stood looking at one another. Mike walked over to his nightstand, opened a drawer, and pulled out an envelope. He walked over to Logan and handed it to her.

Mike: I guess now’s a good a time as any.

She took it and walked out of the room. I stood looking at Mike who gave me an assuring look, one that assured me that whatever was in that envelope contained words that to some extent explained, confessed, and expressed his love for Logan.

            After the fight everyone got scared the cops were going to come and left. All that remained was a dirty kitchen, empty bottles and cans, and a water bong on the table. Classy. A little more sober than before, I decided it would be a good idea to apologize to Seth for my inappropriate f-u. This sounded like a good idea, but when I entered his room I found him and Rachel in bed halfway naked. What? Seth’s no longer a v-dog?

            Moreover, I tried texting and calling Logan to see what the heck Mike’s letter entailed, but no response. Tomorrow. Tomorrow must be better and more enlightened than today, more guided, happiness must be found, self-examination is a must, and hope must be re-kindled. Amen.

            Logan and I would occasionally carpool to school Tuesdays and Thursdays, but Andrew now takes her to school. It’s his way of actively making the official thing work. I don’t mind so much, however, it has put a dent in our quality time together. We hardly work together anymore, and she now spends a great deal of time with Andrew, Tuesdays and Thursdays were our time. I guess sometimes it happens like that.

            In lieu of Logan, there’s this really cool chick in my creative writing class, Rachel. She actually reminds me a lot of Logan; maybe that’s why I think she’s cool. Or, it could be the fact that we both laugh equally hard at this other chick in our class dying to be Sylvia Platt, or the guy who consistently comes to class drunk in hopes of re-creating Hemingway. One day Rachel politely raised her hand and proceeded to ask our older white male professor: ‘Why aren’t there any black authors on the reading list?’ He tried to put it off on the school and curriculum. The next week the syllabus was changed and Zora Neal Hurston and Langston Hughes, amongst others, were added to the list.

            Seth’s excited because with his new paid internship and Mike’s promotion they finally have enough money to move out. I volunteered to go apartment hunting with Seth since Mike wasn’t around and Logan was busy. We actually had a lot of fun. Most guys are simply practical, what fits in the budget is what they get. Seth is reasonable and practical, he had a budget, but he was also looking at other things like size, location, amenities, etc. After two days of active searching he settled on a spacious two bedroom ten minutes from school and twenty minutes from work, with a balcony, washer dryer, fridge, and a clubhouse with a fitness center and kick-ass pool. I was excited for him, and a little jealous that someone who is two years younger than I am is getting his life worked out as I am still trying to figure it all out. This is the positive and negative of quitting weed, now I actually have time to think about how screwed up my life is.

Ian turned out to be a bust. He invited me over to his house one night for dinner and a movie. It had been a few weeks and I really was starting to like Ian, he was intelligent, well-read, and did I mention physically attractive? So, I head over to his house and his roommate answers the door. I should have figured it out then because he had this nervous look on his face and said he would go get Ian. While I was waiting on him I had to go to the bathroom, and while I was in there I noticed a box of Trojans opened with three empty wrappers in the trash can. Quickly, I opened the door to see Ian attempting to sneak some girl out of his room. Seth was right he was real ‘active.’

Logan and I finally had an ‘us’ night. We went to dinner and had lots to catch up on. I told her all about Rachel and how I really wanted them to meet. I also told her about Seth and Mike’s new apartment, and how Ian and I were no more. She told me about how well she was doing in her upper division Spanish class and how she was really looking into becoming a court interpreter. Logan with a career? That was a little crazy for me, but I loved her enthusiasm for life and changes. The one thing I wasn’t anticipating was when she proceeded to tell me that she and Andrew were seriously thinking about moving out. She went on and on about all of their plans, not allowing me much room to ask questions like: ‘What the hell are you going to do about Mike?’

            After four days with Mike out of commission, he finally showed up just in time to begin moving into the new place. Though, I had no intentions of actually helping them, I offered my non-existent services just to get out of my house. There wasn’t a whole lot of moving to be done since they didn’t really have any furniture except a kitchen table. I did, however, help them plan their official house warming party for next weekend. When all the hard work had been done we sat at the table and opened a bottle of Jack (at Mike’s request) and coke, and sat talking about the week.

Me: Thanks Seth, you were so right about Ian.

Seth: I didn’t want to come off as a salt tosser, but he’s a bit much.

Mike: Worse than me?

Seth: No, but she’s not thinking of dating you seriously.

Thanks Seth, now Mike’s thinking about Logan.

Mike: I don’t think anyone wants to date me seriously.

Me: Ok, it’s obvious you’re talking about Logan, what do you expect her to do?

Mike: I don’t know. I’m just trying to make her see that I lo–, really like her.

Seth: By sleeping with tons of other girls? No offense, but you’re not really the steady type.

Me: Seth, you sure have a way with words man.

Seth: What sense does it make to lie to him? Let’s see, if I was Logan I could choose the attractive playboy with many notches on his belt, or the artsy gentleman who’s been actively chasing me for two years.

Mike: And how do you know I haven’t?

Me: You have? What did she say when you told her?

Mike: I haven’t actually told her yet. When we slept together I wanted to tell her then, but she was so intent on no one knowing and never letting it happen again.

Seth: You should totally tell her how you feel. If she picks you, great, if she doesn’t at least you know where you stand.

Mike: What do you think Ros?

Me: I don’t know about that. You could risk your friendship by telling her, I mean she is in a relationship. And, what if she doesn’t feel the same?

Seth: Rosalyn you know how she feels, at least give him a hint.

Me: No, Logan is my best friend and I promised I wouldn’t say anything or get in the middle, so I’m not.

Mike: I’m going to tell her I love her at the house warming party next week.

            Writing. Since I was a kid writing has always been important to me. Since I can remember I had a diary or journal that I wrote in chronicling everything that was going on in my life. It used to drive my mother crazy because my diary had a lock on it, so every time she tried to pry, she never had the key, therefore she never had access. When I look back at what I wrote I often laugh at how serious of a kid I was. I let Logan read portions once and she explained to me that not everyone is so detailed and able to tell stories as I had told them. The question was never if I had writing abilities but moreover what would, should, could I write. My classes have sparked a fiction side in me, I’ve never thought of before, and since my current life isn’t anywhere as interesting as my childhood I suppose it will do for now.

            Congrats are in order all around this week. Seth just got a full time internship as a media specialist at Cop Esthetic Records, a major independent label out of Southern California. It’s his first real paying gig and I’m looking forward to all the shwag and free shows. I really hope this works out for Seth though, and not only because of the cool and free stuff, but because it’s his dream to one day head a media department at a major entertainment company and this could be a major stepping stone.

            Next, Mike finally got moved up from busser to server. To some, this may seem like a small feat, but in reality it’s a much sought after position in the restaurant world. Bussers walk with maybe thirty to fifty dollars a night in tips, whereas servers have the potential to clear anywhere from seventy-five to two hundred dollars depending on the night and section. Mike wanted to have a celebratory dinner Sunday after the screening of the short film did in L.A. That turned out to be a lot less gratifying than planned.

            First, Mike brought this new girl he’s been dating (sleeping with), Bianca. Bianca is shallow and obnoxious, but not around Mike. Around Mike she’s passive and accommodating, around Seth and me she’s ridiculously nosey and uncomfortably common, and I personally loathe the fact that Mike has allowed her in public with us for the past two weeks.

            Next, the film was ok. The story line was underdeveloped, mainly because once the geek gets the girl he gets beat up by Mike’s character and then it just ends. I can say that I thought the whole thing was edited well and Mike did a really good job. The problem with all of that is everyone in the room wanted to talk to Mike about future projects and the director’s ego overcame him so he began degrading Mike in weird film talk. Tisk, tisk director man, Seth is an all around geek, so once he began breaking down the new film technology and such, director man got burned.

            Lastly, did I mention Logan made it to the celebration, with Andrew. This wasn’t an uncommon thing to see Logan and Andrew together after a fight; however, I had failed to tell Mike they were now officially an item because I could never find the right time to bring it up:

‘Hey buddy congrats on moving up to server and doing a kick-ass job in the flick, btw, Logan and Andrew are actually official now.’

‘Thank you?’

            Things were going so smoothly, Bianca was all over Mike stroking his fluffed up ego, and Logan and Andrew had managed to make it through the night without fighting. Then, perhaps Bianca noticed the way Mike glanced over at Logan longingly, or maybe Andrew picked up on a tension between the two of them and enticed Bianca to pry, but eventually Logan was asked if Andrew was her boyfriend. Mike immediately directed his attention to Logan, Seth nudged me under the table, Bianca awaited an answer, and Andrew proceeded:

‘Yes I am. We made it official last week and I got her this necklace.’

Bianca, ‘It’s beautiful. Maybe we could double date and you could show Mike a few things.’

‘No.’ Both Mike and Logan.

Andrew, ‘Why not?’

‘Who knows if Bianca will be around next week, we’re talking about Mike and a tryst.’ Me.

            Ok, so maybe I found pleasure in helping out a friend by insulting a chick who I find absolutely repulsive. She laughed it off, but not as hard as Seth did. Mike immediately excused himself from the table. Logan leaned over to whisper in my ear:

‘I thought you told him.’

‘You asked me to tell him, but I didn’t know when. Why didn’t you just tell him yourself?’

‘Because…’

‘What aren’t you telling me?’

‘I lied about him being bad in bed, and I lied about not ever wanting to be with him.’

Me, ‘So, Andrew’s your boyfriend or not?’

Her, ‘Both, neither, depends.’

‘Depends on what?’

‘The day, the time, my mood, his position.’

‘Ok, so what are you going to do about the situation?’

‘Nothing, everything, something.’

‘What are you going to do about Mike?’

‘Mike?’

‘Yeah the guy you slept with who’s totally in love with you.’

‘Eh.’

            Speaking of Mike, he got the part in the short so he’s been really excited about it. The other day I ran lines with him and he’s actually decent. If I ever wrote a screenplay with the handsome playboy type I would definitely cast him. Maybe this could be his big break. The director is far out though. He doesn’t want them to rehearse together, he’s stressing that they memorize lines and show up to film with an innate sense of each other. It’s a short film for a grade, but hey, it’s his flick so I guess it’s all good.

            I hung out with Seth and his newfound friends. One of the guys, Ian, asked me out. He seemed pretty cool so I gave him my number. Contrary to common belief, I’m not a hoe who just gives my number out to anyone. Chris was just an exception; I was drinking a lot that night to get over the guy I had been dating at the time. To be honest, I’ve had sex twice with the same person.

            Alan. He was my first real boyfriend and the last real thing I want to talk about, but I feel it’s imperative you know about him to better understand me. We met at Spencer’s and immediately hit it off. He worked there about six months (I’ve been there two years) and I told him I could never date a co-worker. Two weeks later he quit, got a job at the local YMCA and we began dating. Everything was great, he loved music, movies, and art, as did I. We often talked about our futures, together, apart, everything. After waiting for twenty-two years I was finally ready to do the deed. We had sex and it was ok for me, but he loved being connected to me in that way. Soon after he began to get comfortable and I was unsure about the whole thing, I mean, I didn’t want him to want me for the sex so I told him to hold on. He did, but his whole demeanor changed, he was spending less time with me, our conversations revolved around pointless fillers. So, of course, I slept with him again to try to rekindle the flame, but again, it was just ok. No fireworks, no orgasm, no connection. I tried talking to him about it but he seemed disinterested. Turned out, he had been talking to his ex so we were done.

            Now Ian, the tall athletic guy who’s really into literature, wants to take me out. I was hooked when he told me he enjoyed the openness of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’. Alan was black, Ian is white, something completely new for me, but worth a try I suppose as I try to figure out this thing called love and companionship.

            Seth had mixed feelings about Ian.

‘So, do you like Ian?’

‘He’s nice. Interesting, to say the least.’

‘I didn’t know you liked white guys.’

‘Well I never said that I didn’t.’

‘Active.’

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’

‘Just know that he gets action and stays active.’

‘Ok, thanks. May I mention that of the two of us, I do have more experience than you?’

‘That was a low blow.’

‘To say the least.’

            I’ve never seen Seth toss salt, or be the over protective friend when it comes to guys. Usually he may drop a word or two, but he lets Logan and me figure it out on our own, namely because we’re older, and women, but also because he knows how we relate to men. I’m boggled as to why he’d give me the heads up now.

            School starts next week and I’m excited. I told my mom and she took me out to dinner. I should go back to school more often, I’ve forgotten what it feels like to go out and not worry about prices. It was a much needed outing, we caught up on life and learned something important about each other; I’m not trying to purposely make her life hell, and she doesn’t want my life to be hell.

            Text last night from Logan: ‘Andrew and I are going to try this relationship thing out, break the news to Mike…’ Yeah, I wonder how that’s going to play out.

            After borrowing a lighter, and an extension cord, we were up and running with chicken breasts, hot dogs, and blended margaritas. This is a much needed mini-vacation for me. Work was horrible. No one’s making money so they’re not tipping and now I’m not making money. Beyond that my mother asked me where I wanted to be in five years. It scared the shit out of me because I realized that I didn’t know. I do know, however, I can’t still be living there, but that’s not a good enough start to planning where I’m going to be and what I’m going to be doing by my twenty-eighth birthday.

            Mike has an audition tomorrow for a student film from USC. It’s for the part of a high school jock in a gritty short about the geek getting the girl. He showed me a sample, but I told him he was trying too hard, and that he should relax and let things come naturally. Now I’m the bad guy who said he was the typical jock. Aren’t women supposed to be the only ones who read into things? And speaking of which, he’s been very attentive to Logan, ‘Can I help you make the margaritas?’ ‘Do you want me to fix your plate?’ She must have really put it on him, though he didn’t put it on her.

            Logan’s already had three drinks and we’ve been here maybe an hour and fifteen minutes. This is typical ‘forget about Andrew’ behavior. I’ve learned to let Logan do her own thing because trying to stop her only yields a blatant disregard, whereas going with it allows her to acknowledge her own wrong doing and she’ll cut herself off. It’s funny watching Mike cater to her while she just ignores it.

            Seth and I had a very intense talk about books and the future of print in the evolving technology age. All the while he stayed on his phone texting and updating his facebook. I sure wish I could multi task like that. Moreover, who was he talking to? ‘One of these fee’s trying to make it happen.’ Who are you? I was dying to have that conversation with him, but of course I began to feel my buzz and decided against saying something I would regret.

            Two hours and four drinks later Logan pulls me to the side and said she needed to show me something. Please not her nipple piercing again. She reached down into her bag and pulled out a college catalogue.

‘You’re enrolling this semester.’

‘Man, you know how I feel about school.’

‘Yeah, but I’m not going to let you throw your life or talents away.’

‘What do you expect me to take?’

‘Creative writing and story building, and they’re both the same days and times as my classes so we can carpool.’

When Logan really wants something she has this insane drive to make it happen and going against her is literally pointless.

‘Ok’

            It had been a good day. I didn’t get a chance to talk to Seth, but by the third hour he put his cell on silent chilled and with us. Mike got over the snub I never intentionally made and got a milf’s number who was having her three-year-old son’s birthday. Logan had cut herself off early and was enjoying life, and I had gone over the catalogue and was excited about exploring my professional writing dreams one course at a time. Everything was great until…Andrew showed up.

            Talk about a buzz kill. Logan quickly began packing up her blender and Mike immediately asked if she wanted him to ‘handle it’. At any rate, Seth and I were innocent bystanders with one goal, keep the peace. The faster we packed up, the faster Andrew walked across the grass. He reached us in less that a minute. Seth and I gave a cordial hello, which Andrew returned and re-focused his attention on Logan. Of course Mike wanted to be the hero.

Macho Mike, ‘Hey man, what are you doin’ over here?’

Angry Andrew, ‘I’ve been trying to get a hold of Logan for the past week and her roommates said she was here.’

Logan grabs her blender and starts walking away, ‘Not now Andrew. You’ll receive a call from me when I don’t hate you!’

Mike, ‘That means she doesn’t want to talk right now but-

Andrew, ‘I know what the fuck that means man. No disrespect, but I don’t need the translation, I want to talk to my girlfriend.’

With that Mike looked stunned, Andrew looked suspicious, and Seth and I felt awkward. I ran to catch up to Logan while Seth attempted to diffuse the high levels of testosterone.

I love bbq’s.

*(when a group of people are walking by a pole and everyone walks on one side while one or more people walk on the other side, they’ve ‘cut’ the pole and need to go back to prevent something bad from happening.)

            All through high school Seth was a very intelligent fat kid. His easy going attitude and down to earth-ness kept him in the loop, but never propelled him to the center. He wasn’t athletic, so sports were out of the question, he hated the inferiority complex his fellow geniuses possessed, and he wasn’t as reserved as his fellow tech geeks were. Talk about a rock and a hard place. He and Mike lived down the street from each other since middle school and were always close friends, very much like brothers. They were such opposites that most people called them the odd couple.

            After high school Mike went off to college and Seth enrolled in the local community college so he could work and save up for university. One day he confessed his love for Casey Whitman, his high school crush, and she told him plainly, ‘You’re cool, but I’m not attracted to you, at all’ (bitch). Crushed, Seth began working out and eating healthier and in a matter of three months shed fifty pounds. That summer Casey saw the new Seth at a party and completely threw herself at him. A virgin, Seth could have easily cashed in, but he wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of being his first. I love Seth.

            Now he’s transferred to UCR and he’s majoring in computer technology stuff. It’s all Greek to me, but he’s got it all figured out.

 Me, ‘When are they going to come out with a cell phone that’s simply an earpiece?’

Seth, ‘Well, it’s a matter of Moore’s Law.’

‘Which means?’

‘Which means microchip size and capability doubles approximately every three years, give or take some months.’

‘So, soon?’

‘Perhaps, but with increased info and power on smaller chips comes increased heat. It’s possible to create a computer the size of a cell phone, but if you give it the same power of a larger computer it’s going to overheat and melt.’

‘So, never.’

‘What do you think about online books?’

          I have been a little concerned about Seth recently. Since his transformation and Mike coming back from college, he’s attempted to embrace his new coolness, but at what cost? Some of the company he’s been keeping puts him in compromising situations, including a drug raid. This is important because Seth doesn’t do drugs, not even weed, but his new friends obviously do, and possibly sell it. He’s got the most promise of all of us and I can’t just let some drug-dealing hoodlums disrupt that! Seth’s also been objectifying women, much like Mike, and though it’s typical of males, it’s not typical of Seth, who btw is still a v-dog.

            I suppose I’ll break the news to him this weekend when we go to the park for our monthly bbq. And yes I said monthly, there’s something about all four of us together catching up that yields a good time. Let’s hope for the best.
